May 6, 2023 By Cathy Baker Leave a Comment

Fathers’ Day is only a few days away, I bet the kids are already busy buzzing around about what to prepare for dad. Lucky for you, I found not just one, but two creative Fathers Day Desserts that you and your kids can whip up in the kitchen! And these are no ordinary recipes. They are inspired by daddy’s favorites: grilled food and bacon. Read on to know how!

How To Make Creative and Unbelievably Easy Fathers Day Desserts

Fathers’ Day Desserts Specialty: Barbecue Grill Themed Cupcakes And Bacon Sugar Cookies

Tough on the outside, but soft inside, that is how I would describe my Daddy dearest.  Even now that I already have kids, he still looks out for me and my family.

While the kids and I were brainstorming as to what to prepare for the two big guys in the house, I came across with this fun video by Ros which fits perfectly to what we were looking for.

See, like most Dads, my father is also a big fan of grilling. While my husband, on the other hand, is addicted to bacon. Put ’em together, and guess what we’ll be making for Fathers’ Day?

RECIPE #1

Barbecue Grill Themed Cupcakes

Using any chocolate cake recipe is definitely okay in making these Fathers day desserts. In this case, we are using Ro’s chocolate cake recipe.

Ingredients To Make The Chocolate Cupcakes:

  • 4 Eggs
  • 1 & 1/3 cup of All purpose flour
  • 1 & 1/3 cup of Sugar
  • 2/3 cup of Brown Sugar
  • 1 cup of Soured Cream
  • 2/3 cup of Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 1/3 cup of Water
  • 1/4 cup of Vegetable Oil
  • 2 tsp of Vanilla Extract
  • 1/2 tsp of Grounded Cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp of Salt
  • 1 tsp of Baking Powder
  • 1 & 1/2 tsp of Baking Soda

Materials Needed To Decorate:

  • 1 pack of Mike and Ikes Candies

1. Dry Ingredients

A. Combine All Except Sugars

In a big mixing bowl, add your cocoa powder, flour, salt, cinnamon, baking soda and baking powder.

B. Add the Sugars

Add the white and brown sugars, then whisk again.

2. The Wet Ingredients

A. First Half of the Wet Ingredients

In a medium sized bowl, combine water, 4 eggs, vanilla extract and whisk together until everything is evenly combined.

B. Second Half of the Wet Ingredients

Then add sour cream and vegetable oil, and mix it one more time.

3. The Dry and Wet Ingredients

Dig a little well in the middle of the mixed dry ingredients, making a little hole. Pour in the mixed wet ingredients in the middle of the well. Mix with your hand mixer at medium speed until everything is well combined.

4.  Scoop and Bake

Once the batter is all mixed together, scoop about 2/3 full into each cupcake tray. Heat your oven to 350 °F and bake for about 18 minutes.

Time To Turn The Cupcakes Into Mini Grilled Goodies!

Decorate The Cupcakes
1. Make the Embers

No need for frostings! Simply sprinkle orange sugar sprinkles over the cupcakes. They will look like the charcoal embers glowing underneath the grill!

2. Line the Grills

Take your gray frosting and start frosting lines over the cupcake to make it look like the barbecue grill.

3. Make the Mini-Hotdogs

Simply draw little lines with your black edible pen over the red Mike and Ikes candy pieces to make it look like grilled hot dogs.

4. Make  The Barbecue

Just mold the caramel candy with your hand to make it look like a mini-steak being grilled. Then draw lines again with your black edible pen.

5. Make the Kebabs

Then cut your red, yellow and green Dots candies with your cutting knife into chunks and then insert them to your toothpick.

Tip: Prepare your toothpicks by adjusting the size to exactly fit the diameter of your cupcakes.

6. Ready to Serve

Chill and set aside to prepare for the second recipe.

RECIPE #2

Bacon Sugar Cookies

Ingredients and Tools:

  • Sugar Cookie Dough (Don’t know how to make one? Try this simple recipe!)
  • Hand Mixer
  • Cookie Pan
  • Parchment Paper
  • Wooden Skewers
  • Red Food Coloring

Procedure:

1. The 3 Sugar Cookie Dough

A. The Pink  Dough

This is done by putting one drop of red coloring into the cookie mixture. And then mix using the electric hand mixer until the dough turns pink.

Tips: The dough must be divided into 3 equal parts.

B. The Red Dough

Second, you put a generous amount of red in the second bowl and mix with the electric hand mixer at medium speed. Stop when you achieve that deep red color. Leave the 3rd bowl as is.

2. Wrap and Chill

When the cookie dough is sticky and ready, wrap each of the 3 doughs tightly with a thin plastic wrapper, individually. Pop them in the freezer for about 20 minutes to chill.

3. Bacon Mold

A. Unwrap the Red Cookie Dough

Unwrap the red cookie dough first, and then get a pinch of flour to cover your whole hand and over the cookie dough to avoid sticking the dough all over your hands while you reshape them.

B. Bottom Layer

Form 5 rows of valleys on the red dough, by making a “karate” chop to make the elongated pit.

C. Middle Layer

Alternate the tanned normal dough and the pink dough to fill in the valleys of the red dough.

C.  Top Layer

Cover the top most with a thin layer of the flattened tanned dough. And then place them in the freezer to chill again for about 20 minutes.

4. The Baking Pan

While waiting for the cookies dough to chill, prepare the baking pan. Cut a sheet of parchment paper to fit the size of the pan.  Place your Wooden skewers and place them underneath the parchment paper so that when you lay the cookie dough on top, it will create waves.

5. The Cutting

Once done with the chilling, cut the dough into thin cookie strips and place them on top of the cookie sheet. Make sure they are an 1 & 1/2 inch apart so that when they expand, they will not touch each other.

6. The Baking

Arrange the cookie dough strips 1 & 1/2 inch away from each other to give them room when they expand while they bake. Set your oven to 375 ºF and bake for 7 – 9 minutes.

Tips:

  • The thicker the cookie dough, the longer they are to bake.
  • Keep your eye on your cookies so they won’t turn too brown! We have to keep the colors intact as much as possible.

7. Cool Completely

When done baking, remove them from the oven but DO NOT TOUCH THEM. Just leave them in the pan and wait for them to cool down. This way, the waves are maintained until the cookies harden.

8. Bacon Sweets Ready to Serve

Lovely bacon-inspired cookie strips will “wow”, not only the Papas’, but more of the kids, I’m sure! 🙂
